Melanotaenia nigrans are found in a variety of freshwater environments but seem to prefer slow-flowing clear water streams, billabongs, and swamps with abundant aquatic vegetation. This rainbowfish is ideally suited to a planted tank, and will show its best colours in such surroundings. Keep open spaces between areas of plantings to allow swimming space and areas for males to display each another.
